What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage ?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is an advanced therapeutic technique consisting of very light and gentle rhythmic hand movements. These unique sequences move the skin over the underlying tissues whilst observing the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system. Their intention is to accelerate lymphatic flow.
It is a massage technique which covers the whole body and which assists in cleansing the tissues of waste products and excess fluids. It also promotes health in the immune system, aids relaxation and can be helpful in pain management. Some chronic conditions respond well to MLD as do some large oedemas of the extremities.
What does this course include ?
The Basic Vodder course is primarily practical and all the basic MLD strokes will be presented and practised. During the five days the whole body will be covered.
In addition to the practical sessions each day will contain one and a half hours of theory. This will cover the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system and how this is directly relevant to the precise strokes used in the technique. The positive effects of MLD on various body systems will be explored and some simple pathologies studied. Contraindications and precautions will also be covered.
Who is this course for ?
This is a postgraduate course for bodyworkers. As the entire focus of the course is on MLD it is expected that participants will already have received instruction in, or have experience in clinical practice. Relevant anatomy, physiology and pathology is taught but, once again, participants should be in possession of a qualification in Anatomy and Physiology. Details of courses providing such qualifications are available from Maitri Foundation.
Who is teaching the course ?
The course will be taught by Susan Chesney who runs a busy practice in St. Albans, Hertfordshire where she treats neck and back problems and also works with sports injuries. She became interested in MLD when looking for a form of massage that would alleviate cellulite and fluid retention. On reading information on the Vodder Method of MLD she signed up for the basic course. She was so impressed with the results of the therapy that she completed her training in Austria at the Vodder School. Since that time she has she has worked closely with the medical profession utilising MLD in treating primary and secondary lymphoedema.
What qualification is awarded ?
Successful participants receive a certificate from the Vodder School in Austria. It acknowledges that they have completed the basic course in MLD.
Is it possible to undertake further study ?
Yes - details of the more advanced Vodder MLD courses will be available during the training.
